It is often heard, and it is correct, that for the great writers of antiquity each generation creates its own translation. However, it is equally correct that certain translations, renowned for their fidelity, quality and ethos, in turn become classic texts. Such works of timeless value are indisputable and the translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey sculpted by N. Kazantzakis and I. Kakridis, great monuments of modern Greek speech that have won the appreciation of philologists and the love of readers since they were first published, in 1955 and 1965 respectively. The two translators, the writer Nikos Kazantzakis and the philologist Ioannis Kakridis, believed that modern Greek should be written in a monotonous tone. However, in order to make the translations of the Homeric epics accessible to the general public, they decided to publish them in the polytonic system that everyone was taught and used in those years. With their present reprint in monotonic, the two works take on the form that the translators would have preferred from the beginning. The new edition incorporates all the corrections that I. Kakridis had noted in his personal copies of the Iliad and the Odyssey. After the text, the Notes follow, in the form they had in the first edition. At the end, it was deemed appropriate to add an extensive Glossary, where rare, poetic, idiomatic and other words that readers, especially young people, are likely to be unfamiliar with are explained.

https://hellenic-books.com/products/%ce%bf%ce%bc%ce%ae%cf%81%ce%bf%cf%85-%ce%bf%ce%b4%cf%8d%cf%83%cf%83%ce%b5%ce%b9%ce%b1-homers-odyssey-modern-greek
