In c AD 55-60 Leg II Augusta built a 38-acre legionary fortress, of which excavations located timber barracks, a stone bath house and a supply base. Abandonment in AD 75 was followed c 80 by establishment of a civitas capital, retaining the military defences. Subsequent prosperity is reflected in the extensive extramural development (receiving stone defences ?180-200) and much rebuilding in stone from late 2nd century. Alterations to the basilica/forum continued to mid 4th/early 5th century when, after levelling, the site became a Christian cemetery.

Second Hand.
