This book is based on lectures given over the past twenty-five years to undergraduates in their first term of ancient history. Miss Jeffrey describes in her opening chapters the typical polis, its home government and colonial expansion, and then considers in turn each city-state in mainland Greece, the Aegean, and the cost of Asia Minor.
