One of the great tragedies of the Middle ages was the gradual division of Christendom into two ultimately hostile worlds, the byzantine East and the Latin West. Against this backdrop of estrangement six related essays examine key points or themes in the interaction of these two worlds with emphasis on the ecclesiastical and cultural influences of Byzantium on the West-influences which, as is not usually realized, continued until as late as 1600.
