This study expresses views about the management og U.S. foreign policy and, specifically, about the management of our Aegean and Cyprus policies that grew out of the author's experience as a professional diplomat who spent fifteen years working on the interrelated problems of Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus.
This book is divided into ten chapters, with an introduction to establish the scene for readers who are not specialists in the worlds of Byzantine and Ottoman state politics, as practiced in the latter half of the twentieth century. The first three chapters deal with various aspects of U.S. policy in the area since the Truman Doctrine; the next tree with Soviet and NATO policies, Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus in relation to the Middle East, and finally in relation to eachother; the three following chapters analyze Greek-Turkish-Cypriot differences and suggest the most promising lines of approach if they are to be resolved; and the concluding chapter advances reasons for a new diplomatic initiative at this time and suggests the appropriate role for the United States.
