Geometric Greece

The Geometric style of pottery, which lends its name to the period flourished in Greece during the ninth and eight centuries B.C. : a most creative age, which saw the dawn of Hellenic civilization and the evolution of the Greek city- state, the composition of the Homeric poems, the invention of the Greek alphabet after several centuries of illiteracy, the rebirth of figured art, the rise of the great Panhellenic sanctuaries (Olympia, Delphi, Delos) , and the first exodus of the Greek colonists to the shores of South Italy and Sicily. 

Professor Coldstream is well known as the author of the standard work on Greek geometric pottery.
