Greek Popular Morality in the Time of Plato and Aristotle

This book describes the moral attitudes, concepts and assumptions held by the average unphilosophical Athenian. It relates their views to present-day popular morality: oratory and comedy are treated as primary evidence, but reference is also made to Sophocles, Euripides, Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon and others. The author draws contrast and comparisons with modern religious, social and legal principles.

No knowledge of Greek is required on the part of the reader, thus the appeal is not only to the academic but also to a more general audience.
