Greek Scenic Conventions in the Fifth Century BC.

Greek Scenic Conventions in the Fifth Century BC.

By Peter Arnott /

Published by Clarendon Press Oxford,

ISBN

Both classical scholarship and practical theatre experience are here employed to present a view of Greek Play production that modifies, and sometimes depart radically from, currently  accepted theories. It is argued that the fifth-century theatre did possess a raised stage ; that scene painting, in the modern sense, was unknown ; and that convention was used more extensively than is even now realized. Euripides' growing tendency towards greater stage illustration is examined, and a number of particular stage problems, some never before discussed, are investigated in detail.
