For many of us who have no Greek, Chapman's Odyssey opens up, as it did for Keats, a new world of experience; and in spite of Matthew Arnold's strictures, it remains the most poetically alive of all Homeric translations. But how far does it give us the original Homer? Chapman claimed that he had a vision of the Odyssey's true meaning.
