I Claudia : Women in Ancient Rome

The catalogue of the Yale University Art Gallery’s first major loan exhibition of works of ancient art, I, Claudia: Women in Ancient Rome brings together important depictions of Roman women, as well as members of their households, presenting a comprehensive look at the lives of Roman women as holders of power, as mothers and wives, and in posthumous monuments. The study begins with an exposition on gender theory in Roman art and is further divided into sections on the public, domestic, and funerary realms, each of which is preceded by an extensive introduction. Catalogue entries of works in the exhibition provide provenance and bibliography as well as detailed discussion of technique, stylistic variations, and historical narratives in the representations of women.
