Piece of Truth

Piece of Truth

By Amalia Flemin /

Published by Jonathan Cape,

ISBN 9780395154748

A book about Lady Fleming's experiences with the dictatorship that ws controlled by officers in the Greek military and was referred to as Junta. This was the period from 1967 and into 1974 during which time Greece lived through these dark years with cancelled Constitutional freedoms, imprisonments, tortures and disappearances.

It is a remarable thing about the human spirit that is able to manifest itself in the worst of times. It's like that flower which blossoms in the middle of a barren field with only wild weeds.

Amalia Koutsouri was born in Constantinople(Instanbul)in 1909. During World War II she participated in the resistance to the German and Italian occupation of Greece and jailed by the Italians for these activities. After the war, in 1946, she went to London on a scholarship tp study. In 1953 she married Dr. Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. He died in 1955 and she returned to Greece in 1963, just four years before the Junta took over Greece in a bloodless coup. Within these four years she became a medical doctor.

Her book includes detailed accounts of the activities which made her a target of the Junta. She was arrested for acts of abotage, tried in a Junta court, and forced to return to London. Her accusers also charged her with assisting in the escape of a politician and poet by the name of Alexandros Panagoulis.
