This work, being published in three volumes, sets out to give a funeral over-all ;picture of the Roman coinage from its beginning in the early third century BCE dow to the fall of the empire in the West and the transition to the Byzantine coinage system in the early fifth century CE. 

This volume covers the coinage of t4he Principate from the beginning of Augustus' reign in 31BCE to the coinage reform of Diocletian in D 294, and includes the coinage of the separate British Empire of Carausius and Allectus which was reconquered in 296CE.
