Representative Government in Greek and Roman History

For many years political scientists have tended to think that the institutions of representative government are of relatively recent origin and peculiar to the Western World.

The present book is, therefore of particular interest both because its author takes issue with this view and because he supports his argument with ancient evidence recently discovered.

His main purpose is to illustrate the extent of representative government in ancient Greece and Rome and to clarify its relationship to other Greek and Roman political institutions, particularly those of the city-state.
