Sappho and Alcaeus : An Introduction to the Study of Ancient Lesbian Poetry

Our Knowledge of the poetry of Sappho and Alcaeus has been considerably extended by discoveries made and published in recent years: and some of the new fragments go far towards answering questions which have long been asked.

All the longer and more informative pieces, both old and new, are here reproduced with translation, commentary, and explanatory essays: the primary purpose is to determine what may now be said with reasonable certainty above the lives and literary achievements of the two poets, and to show how much they contribute to our understanding of the social and political conditions of the time.
