The Art of Roman Britain

This book describes the development of Roman art in Britain from the Iron Age and the first Mediterranean influences until the 4th century. It demonstrates both the originality of the art and its aesthetic merit, and also the vital part it played in the daily life of the inhabitants of the province. It takes a look at art and the Celts, art in the era of conquest, and art and the Roman army. It also provides detailed information on the golden age of Britain in late antiquity. The final chapter deals with attitudes to Romano-British art. These have changed from a patronizing view to one of appreciation for the special blend of Celtic and classical influences at work in the province. The author has included descriptions and illustrations of pieces from the recently-discovered Hoxne hoard.
