The Characters of Theophrastus

The Characters of Theophrastus are unique in the history of letters. They have been much imitated, never bettered. The text can be obscure, and the Greek can be a little monotonous although not without a certain charm and aptness - as though the stark phrases were deliberately chosen to lay bare the failings of mankind.

This revised edition includes up-to-date references, to supplement the Bibliography, and adds an Appendix of new material.
