The Emperor Julian

Browning's biography of the Augustus Julian (361-363), the last pagan emperor of a unified Rome, is an excellent piece of work. This book can be profitably appropriated by anyone. In addition to his effort to come up with a coherent narrative description of the course of Julian's short life, an effort fraught with imponderables, Browning includes an appendix describing the history of the various biographies, historical and fictional, of the emperor.
