The Greeks in the United States

The Greeks in the United States

By Theodore Saloutos /

Published by Harvard Unversity Press,

ISBN

Little has been written about the immigrants to this country from southern and eastern Europe that is not either derogatory or ultra nationalistic, defensive, and resentful. Most of the earlier accounts of the Greeks in the United States fall into one or the other of these categories, and the one most frequently consulted was written by an author with no knowledge of the Greek language.

Mr Saloutos is in a unique position to correct past errors. Both his parents came to this country from Peloponnesian villages during the first decade of the twentieth century and as a child he spoke the language of his parents. Combined with his intimate acquaintance with the language and people is his professional training as a historian. This is intended to be the most comprehensive account of the Greeks in America ever written.
