While royal dynasts battled for dominion over Alexander the Great's disintegrating, an age of cultural globalization flourished, and the people and ideas travelled freely over great areas, from the Rhone to the Indus, and Egypt to Tajikistan.
In this Very Short Introduction, Peter Thonemann explores this extraordinary era - from the magnificent library of Alexandria to the city of Priene, which rotated honorary statues depending on whose rule they happened to fall under at the time. From the death of Alexander to the final stand of Cleopatra, he traces the story of this cultured world, and the power struggles which wracked it.
Peter Thonemann teaches Greek and Roman history at Wadham College, Oxford. He is the author of the Maeander Valley: A Historical Geography from Antiquity to Byzantium (2011), the winner of the Anglo-Hellenic League's prestigious Runciman Prize 2012, and co-author (with Simon Price) of The Birth of Classical Europe: A History from Troy to Augustine (2010). He writes regularly on all aspects of Greek and Roman history and culture.
