No one has done more in our time for the understanding of Vergil than the late W.F. Jackson Knight, of the University of Exeter. His Roman Vergil and the translation of the Aeneid are both justly famed; but perhaps nowhere has he originated more startling lines of thought than in Vergil's Troy, a study of the Second Aeneid, and his subsequent relation of the Sixth Aeneid to initiation rites, in Cumaean Gates.
